The Thwaites Glacier,

located in Antarctica, has been melting faster than previously thought, according to a recent study conducted by the University of Washington. The study found that the glacier has been shrinking by up to two meters per year since 2014, and it is now retreating at a rate of between three and four meters per year.

The study revealed that the glacier is melting from both its surface and base, which is contrary to what was previously believed. Scientists had assumed that the melting was due to ocean currents melting its base, but the study showed that the main culprit is actually the surface of the glacier itself, which is melting due to warmer temperatures.

This is concerning, as the Thwaites Glacier is part of the so-called "doomsday glacier" system, which contains enough ice to raise global sea levels by 1.2 meters. Previous estimates have suggested that this could take centuries, but the study suggests that it could be much sooner.

The researchers are now calling for more research into the glacier's melting rate to better understand the risks it poses to global sea levels.
